Session

Neck and shoulders

A short session on the neck, shoulders and upper back, and nowhere else.

This is the session for a desk, a laptop or a backpack. You choose the pressure, Woodrow spends the whole time on the neck, shoulders and upper back, and the rest of you stays covered and resting.

Lengths

  • 30 minutes, neck and shoulders

  • 45 minutes, with the upper back

  • Add 15 or 30 minutes when you book

A therapist's two hands on the bare shoulder of a side-lying client, a white sheet drawn up over the rest of the back

What happens

In the room

  1. 01

    Step 1: Ask

You choose a pressure word and say where it feels tightest.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Settle

A minute of lighter work to warm the area before pressure builds.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Focus

Steady, specific pressure on the neck and shoulders, checked with you as it goes.

Good to know

Pressure, cover and what to wear

  • Pressure

Neck work can feel firm quickly. Say so early if you want it lighter, and Woodrow adjusts straight away.

  • Covered

You are covered by a sheet or towel the whole time. Only the part being worked on is uncovered, and it is covered again when we move on.

  • Ask your doctor first

If the area has a recent injury, a wound or a swelling you have not shown your doctor, ask your doctor first.

  • What to wear

A loose top you can slip off is all you need to remove. You stay covered, and the area is uncovered only while it is worked.

Who does it

One therapist, one room

The person who asks about pressure is the person who works to it.

    Woodrow Maddox

    Massage therapist and owner

Woodrow works with slow, firm pressure and uses his thumbs, knuckles and forearms where a muscle asks for it. He asks how much pressure you want before you lie down, again halfway through, and at the end. He speaks English.

Questions about this session

Can I do this on my lunch hour?

Yes. A 30-minute session fits a lunch hour, and the room is a short walk from the downtown offices.

Can I add time on the day?

If the next slot is open, Woodrow can add 15 or 30 minutes. Otherwise add it when you book.

Is this the same as deep tissue?

It can be as firm as you like. The difference is where the time goes, not how hard it is.
